The drugs 'cavalier' contraceptive pills

Many drugs are in the " hydrophobic " group of birth control pills

Below is a list of some common (but not all) drugs you should stay away from while taking birth control pills, otherwise you will need to use plan B:

1. Types of antibiotics

- Rifampin, treatment of TB and infection.
- Tetracyline, often used to treat acne.
- Ampicillin and Amoxicillin, treating infections such as urinary tract infections.

2. Antiepileptic drugs and migraines

- Phenobarbital, treatment of seizures or insomnia
- Carbamazepine, treatment of epilepsy, bipolar disorder or sometimes schizophrenia.
- Topamax (Topiramate active ingredient), epilepsy treatment and migraine.

3. Antifungal drugs

- Griseofulvin, treatment of skin infections as usual for athletes.
- Nystatin, treatment of tinea, skin infections.

4. Anti-anxiety and depression medications

Benzodiazepine, Prozac, Celexa, Zoloft .

5. Medications for HIV treatment

Ask your doctor about any HIV medications. They can affect hormone levels in the body, thereby altering the effectiveness of birth control pills.

6. Medications for respiratory diseases:

Theophylline, for treating respiratory diseases such as asthma or pulmonary obstruction syndrome (COPD).

7. Medications for diabetes

Avandia

8. Natural supplements

Because it is not standardized, on many labels, natural supplements are not required to list drug interactions as on pharmaceutical drugs. Be sure to tell your doctor which natural supplements you are using before taking hormonal birth control measures; especially with St. John's wort herbs (there is a place called ' Rash ' - popular for treating depression) or soy products.
