Previously, the transgenic maize MON 89034 was granted a certificate of eligibility for food and animal feed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Until now, the first and only genetically modified MON 89034 genetically modified corn event received two certificates of Biosafety and Food & Feed Safety as of the time. this point.

Information from MONRE stated that the biosafety certificate was issued after the evaluation and appraisal process of the Expert Group and the Biosafety Council in accordance with the order and procedures specified in the State management documents on biosafety for genetically modified organisms, genetic specimens and products of genetically modified organisms.

'This appraisal process also complies with the standards for document assessment and biosecurity certification that have been carried out in the world', a notification from MONRE said.

Before being granted a Biosafety Certificate in Vietnam, the event MON 89034 was licensed to release into the environment in 8 countries around the world, including: Canada (2008), United States (2008), Japan (2008), Brazil (2009), Argentina (2010), South Africa (2010), Philippines (2010) and Honduras (2010).

In Vietnam, the risk assessment report of MON 89034 transgenic maize for the environment and biodiversity has been built on the proven results of biosecurity research in the world and data through limited trials, wide field trials in actual conditions in Vietnam.

'Test results have been certified by MARD as satisfactory' , MONRE stated.

However, after obtaining the Ministry of Natural Resources's Biosafety Certificate and the Certificate of Qualification for Food and Feed, the genetically modified corn still needs more Certificate of Factual Qualification. products and animal feed of the Ministry of Health and recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development as a new plant variety for production and business can be officially put into production in Vietnam.
