The fish spotted 'ghostly green light'
The zebrafish in England glows blue, which looks very spooky, but actually they are genetically modified to serve medical research.

A team of experts from the University of Exeter in England mutated zebrafish genes so that some parts of them could produce fluorescent light. They use these fish in medical research, National Geographic reports.

Endocrine disordering compound is a component of many industrial products - including women's plastic and contraceptive pills. They can 'mimic' the mechanism of the sex hormones that cause negative reproductive problems in both humans and animals. Many previous studies have demonstrated that endocrine disordering compounds may alter the sex of fish, increasing the risk of breast cancer and testicular cancer in humans.
But the scientific community faces great difficulties in monitoring the activity of endocrine disruption compounds in animal bodies. That's why the University of Exeter research team in the UK created the glowing fish. Luminescent parts are places where endocrine disordering compounds can come. Thanks to the glowing phenomenon in zebrafish bodies, scientists can monitor the activity of endocrine disruptors in their bodies.
Lead researcher Charles Tyler said the genetically engineered fish produced some proteins. These proteins do not affect endocrine disordering compounds, but emit green light. Thanks to that light, scientists can observe fish under a microscope to identify tissues attacked by endocrine disruptors.
Currently the gene-altering technology for glowing bodies has only been applied to fish that are less than 6 days old because their skin has not yet produced pigments, which are capable of contrast.
