The floating city of Venice may disappear because of the water shortage

Venice, a paradise of tourism and love of Europe, is slowly disappearing because of a severe drought that makes boats unmovable, mud and garbage emerge.

For two consecutive years, the tide in Venice (Italy) hit a record low level, making this city lacking serious water.Visitors are always excited about the opportunity to sit gondola and walk around the green canals, now their plan has been ruined.

The city has no water, so many waterway vehicles have to lie in one side of the thick mud.

This record low water level of Venice is due to abnormal tidal phenomena that happened last year, combined with a significant decrease in rainfall throughout northeastern Italy.

The tide is usually low at this time of year, but this year the water level in Venice is 70cm lower than the average.

This phenomenon is surprising because flooding is more common in Venice than low tide.

Low water levels make garbage appear everywhere.The city's canals have been degraded over the years and are also evident when the banks of canals are muddy and rubbish, which are mostly items left behind.This makes many people unexpectedly mixed and disappointed about Venice - the romantic floating city.

Severe water shortage of Venice also exposed the crumbling walls of buildings with long history.

Mud and waste in the rivers and canals make the scenery of Venice become more desolate than ever.

The city of Venice does not care much about renovating the canal.The first channel dredging was done in the late 90s after nearly half a century of neglect.The city also lacks a modern wastewater treatment system.

In the past, all human waste was dumped into canals, although large buildings were required to treat waste before being discharged.Large projects such as museums, palaces . all have their own septic tanks but there is always a certain amount of waste leaked.

In recent years, the city council of Venice has spent less and more on canal improvement, instead investing in the MOSE flood protection project worth € 5.4 billion.In addition to drought, Venice is facing challenges from the annual floods.This tourist paradise is expected to "disappear" in the next 20 years because it is still subsiding 1-2mm per year.
