Ingolf Kristiansen, a Norwegian resident, suddenly caught sight of the scene and he took it and sent it to NRK Television.

According to speculation by Aril Slotte - a marine fish expert at the Norwegian marine research institute - the herring has been cornered into the shallow waters of the cormorant (a raptors) and cannot swim to the area. Deeper water should have been stuck and frozen.

Normally seawater freezes at a temperature of about -1.9 degrees Celsius. At that time, the temperature at Lovund was -7.8 degrees Celsius and accompanied by a strong wind.

In January 2013, 20 tons of herring were caught in a beach in northern Norway and so far scientists have not been able to explain the exact cause. There have been many hypotheses such as lack of oxygen, disease, storms.
