Erik Thorsen, President and CEO of REC, said Singapore was chosen to build the plant, after nine months reviewing over 200 potential locations in 18 countries. As expected, the plant will be operational by 2010, with the original products being wafers, energy cells and modules to generate solar energy.

The plant will be able to produce products generating total energy up to 1.5 gigawatts (GW) annually. Currently, the world's largest factory of this type - operated by REC in Norway - has a capacity of 650 megawatts (MW).

Ko Kheng Hwa, executive director of the Economic Development Board (EDB), who signed the contract with REC earlier this week, said: "This plant will be the pioneer in attracting commodities. A series of activities in the field of solar energy into Singapore.

As planned, the plant will initially employ about 3,000 workers, including 2,000 highly skilled employees, and by 2015 the total number of employees at the plant will be about 7,000.
