The mystery of the specialized stream

With a peaceful and romantic look, no one can expect the Strid stream in England to be a monster that "swallowed" people mercilessly.

If only looking like that, no one expected that underneath the clear blue water was a deep, smelling deep pool that made anyone who stepped foot down was sure of death. Anyone who broke into the stream had no chance of surviving, even losing the body.

Why is it that such a wide gap less than 2 meters has such a formidable threat? Walking upstream of the stream will understand the reason for that frightening danger.Less than 100m away, before becoming a 'small stream' , it was a large river with a width of nearly 10m. It is the Wharfe river that flows through Yorkshire town.

But when it came to Bolton Abbey, the river was forced to go through a narrow rock, making the water speed and depth of the area terrible, it was the Strid stream. If you look carefully, it can be seen that rocks on both sides of the stream are all water causing serious erosion.

Hidden under the water is a complex system of caves and tunnels , containing all the water of a large river. No one knows how deep the Strid stream is.

On the surface, Strid seems very gentle, seemingly only deep in the knee with two adjacent banks that many people think they can dance or walk beneath the stream. And indeed, the name Strid means 'step forward' . Currently, around the seaside area warning tourists not to approach the stream or jump over to the other side.

There have been many stories of unfortunate ill-fated victims who stumbled and got this "devil-faced angel" swallowing mercilessly in countless caves and tunnels.

One of the first ill-fated victims of the "cannibal" child is William de Romilly, the daughter of Lady Alice de Romilly. In 1154, the boy slipped when he tried to jump to the other side and never returned. Alice was so distressed that she donated the surrounding land to found Bolton Monastery. This tragic story became immortal when recreated in the poem 'The Force of Prayer' by poet William Wordsworth.

In 1998, the young couple Barry and Lynn Collett walked along the banks of the Wharfe River during their honeymoon. The disaster happened when the water level suddenly rose about 1.5 m in less than a minute because of the heavy rain the night before and swept away the young couple. Lynn's body was found six days later in west Yorkshire. Barry's body was found more than 1 month after the accident site was more than 16km downstream.

Another tragic accident occurred in 2010 when the boy, Aaron Page, 8, was swallowed up by the Strid stream on his birthday. The boy slipped when playing on a rock by the stream. A nearby person immediately ran to grab the boy's hand and tried to pull up. However, the flowing water still swept away the ill-fated boy. Aaron's body was found after 3 hours of searching.
