El Caminito del Rey, or king's trail, is considered the most dangerous walking path in the world.
El Caminito del Rey is located along the wall of the cliff El Chorro in the village of Álora, southern Spain. The construction of this road began in 1901 when workers at the Chorro waterfall and Gaitanejo waterfall found it necessary to have a way to transport materials through waterfalls, as well as to facilitate system inspection and maintenance.
Completed in 1905, it was not until 1921 that the road was inaugurated after the then Spanish king Alfonson XIII used the road; and since then, it has been called the 'King's Trail'.
This road is built of concrete, with steel bay arms and a pillar under the bridge tilting about 45 degrees into the cliff. With a width of only 1m, over 3km long and 100m taller than the river below, El Caminito del Rey is absolutely not a place for those who are afraid of heights.
Currently, this road has been severely degraded and there are many sections of roads that have collapsed, the number of bay arms is very small, but instead, seat belts are installed from the beginning to the end of the road. This makes El Caminito del Rey a destination for adventure travel.
After several fatal accidents occurred here, the local government sealed the road in 2000. However, there are still many tourists desperately overcoming the prohibition, to test the courage .
Now an 8.3 million euro project has been launched to rehabilitate the road, in order to attract more tourists to the region.
