The rat does not know how to be drunk

It weighs less than a golf ball and can curl in your hand. But this quill-like shrew can kill most people in terms of alcohol.

Scientists tracked the tree shrews and recorded their eating times. After filling the amount of nectar equivalent to 9 glasses of wine, the animal still stood firm on its feet, skilfully climbing the palm trees to find other flowers.

Living in a tropical forest in Malaysia, this night-dwelling species is the only species, except humans, "drinking" regularly. It is thought that it digests alcohol in a different way than humans.

Researchers at Bayreuth University in Germany investigated their "beer" preferences for three years studying the Segari Melintang forest in Malaysia. They often visit palm trees with honey-bearing flowers at night.

Each flower is like a miniature brewery, including a yeast that turns honey into a bubbly drink with an alcohol content of up to 3.8% - equivalent to many current beers.
