The record recall of 4.1 million laptop batteries

The Dell Group and the American Product Safety Association (CPSC) are preparing for the largest scale battery swap campaign in the history of the electronics industry, involving PC Inspiron, Latitude and Precision systems and XPS was shipped from April 2004 to July 18, 2006.

CPSC advises consumers to remove the battery and only use the notebook with the adapter device to avoid risk. Dell recently received notice of six battery incidents that overburdened and caused property damage but no casualties yet.

They hope the recall will not significantly affect the company's profit.

Starting tomorrow, customers can visit the dellbatteryprogram.com website to check if there is a need to change to a new battery, or call the toll-free number 1-866-342-0011.

" This is not an easy exchange. Customers will have to deliver batteries to Dell and can only use AC power until the battery is re-sent ," said Richard Shim, an analyst with IDC.

The batteries that Dell was preparing to recall are manufactured by Sony, so it is likely that some other computer manufacturers that are using the batteries will have to review them.

CPSC has listed 339 cases of overheating laptop batteries, not just Dell, from 2003 to 2005.
