The US House of Representatives controlled by the Democratic Party voted to adopt a bill to mitigate federal funding restrictions for human embryonic stem cell research. However, the results of the vote did not reach the 2/3 ratio to overcome the president's veto.
The result was 247 votes, including 210 votes of Democratic Party MP and 37 votes of Republican MP and 176 votes against.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the possibility that President George Bush will veto the bill would "undermine the healing hope of many". However, Republican Rep. Chris Smith, argued that the bill would lead to the destruction of millions of human embryos, a destruction he called " murder ."
President Bush reacted quickly with a statement denouncing Democratic Party MPs to recover a bill he vetoed a year ago.
A few weeks ago, the US Senate passed this bill but lacks a vote to get a 2/3 ratio.
On the other hand, US scientists say they have succeeded in turning normal skin cells from mice into an embryonic state.
However, Professor Hochedlinger, of Harvard University warned: "We do not know if this work can be done again. Until we solve this, the most important thing to do is finding all other solutions to withdraw embryonic stem cells ".
