The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the magnitude of the 6-magnitude seismic occurred at 731 pm local time, February 15, in the state of Oregon, northwestern America. The epicenter is offshore, 250km from the Oregon coast and 440km from Portland.

The Alaska tsunami warning center and the west coast said the seismic was strong but there was no possibility of causing a tsunami. Within an hour after the earthquake, the US National Earthquake Information Center website received 39 notices from people who sensed the shaking that the seismic caused. Most of these people live in northern California and southern Oregon, and all describe this earthquake as "light" or "hard to see".

AP quoted American geophysicist Dale Grant as saying that the area is a place with strong geological activity and earthquakes are not too strange. On February 13, a town in northern California, near the state of Oregon, also witnessed a 5.6-magnitude quake but suffered no damage.

In 1994, a 6.7-magnitude seismic attack in Los Angeles, California's most populous city, caused at least 60 people to die and cause $ 10 billion in material damage. Another earthquake of 6.9 on the Richter scale occurred in San Francisco, also in the state of California, killing 67 people in 1989.
