Israeli scientists say they have discovered a prehistoric ecosystem from millions of years ago that science has never known.
New, crustacean crustacean is found in a cave near the city of Ramle in Israel. Scientists have found 8 unknown species of crustaceans and invertebrates that appear to be similar to scorpions.
Hanan Dimantman, a biologist at the University of Jerusalem, said the cave ecosystem might have been around 5 million years ago, when the Mediterranean covered some parts of Israel.
The cave is sealed and completely isolated from the outside world, even water and nutrients flow through the crevices of the rock above and cannot reach. Scientists believe it remains intact for millions of years.
" Every creature we tested had no eyes, indicating that they lost their eyesight due to evolution, " Dimantman said. DNA testing on specimens shows that they are completely unique. The cave was closed to conduct more detailed surveys.
" This is a cave of amazing biodiversity ," Dimantman said.
