The world's largest banyan tree

Although it sounds incredible, in Kolkata, India has a banyan tree that is bigger than a medium-sized Wal-Mart supermarket. This banyan tree has been recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the world's largest tree.

Located in the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Botanical Garden (India), this 250-year-old old tree is called The Great Banyan . Covering trees covering an area of about 14,400m 2 , opposite sides are about 411m 2 apart.

For comparison, data on the area of Wal-Mart supermarkets shows that the average area of a store is only 0.975 hectares.

The dome of this giant banyan tree includes 3,511 upper roots and clings to the ground, making each root look like a separate tree. It has been recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's largest tree , even printed on Indian stamps.

Tourists can visit the trees at Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Acharya Botanical Garden and walk on the 322m long road around the perimeter of the tree. This banyan tree is even bigger beyond the road, creating an interesting tunnel.

Scientists were surprised that this tree still lives today. It was attacked twice by tornadoes in 1884 and 1886, torn off its main body and invaded by fungi. In 1925, the main stem of the tree (then 15.24m wide) was rotted and forced to be removed.

Even without a body, this banyan tree still lives and continues to grow until today.
