"I was impressed because Wisdom still returned after more than six decades, becoming the oldest bird to reproduce in the wild. Midway biologists continue to take notes to follow it for many years. " Charlie Pelizza, head of the Midway Atoll's US Fish and Wildlife Service project, said.
The reserve staff monitor the breeding process of Wisdom in the past 6 decades with a red bracelet on its right leg. The bird was worn by biologist Chandler Robbins for the first time in 1956 when he began breeding.
Wisdom has raised at least 9 young children to adulthood since 2006. He stayed in the reserve to incubate a newly laid egg and wait for the male Akeakamai to return.
"When I gave him lunch, I knew something came out. The staff were all interested in Wisdom news and returned to hatching eggs," Pelizza said.
