According to Dr. Alan Williams, representative of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) , this is the result of screening more than 63,000 specimens collected by more than 100 scientists throughout 4 years.

This research program - called the Great Australian Bight Research Program - is a collaboration between CSIRO researchers, South Australia Research and Development Institute (SARDI), Flinders University and University of Adelaide.

In the course of the study, they discovered many creatures that the scientific community has never known, and said that they will find more new species if they expand the scope of research and search.

Besides, this research project also confirmed that some of Australia's iconic creatures such as sea lions and fur seals also appeared in this area.

In addition to finding new organisms, this $ 15 million research program - funded primarily by oil and gas group BP - also found evidence of large oil and gas fields in the region.
