In her mother's safe arms, the sisters looked like any healthy and bright girls. But Ashleigh Lennon, 6, and his 3-year-old sister Alisha will die before they turn 12.
These are the only two sisters in the UK known to have the deadly disease called Batten . There is no cure for this neurological disease, and although both sisters are born perfectly healthy, early death is still inevitable.
Lennon, 35, lives in Lancaster (England), there is another daughter, Lucy, 14 years old. " My heart broke when I saw Ashleigh's condition deteriorating and knew that Alisha would follow that path, " she said.
Ashleigh was born in May 2003, weighing about 4 kg, healthy. But when she was 3 years old, she had a seizure. " At first I wasn't worried because I thought this situation only happened once. But when the seizures started to appear more often, I had to take her to the doctor, " Lennon said.
" I read the documents online before the final result, and I found it related to Batten, but it was so rare that I never imagined my child could get it ."
" When the doctor confirmed it and was in the final stages, I was really depressed ."
The doctors postponed testing for Alisha for 6 months thinking that only one sick child was enough to make the mother miserable. But those six months were Lennon's sleepless, restless days. In the end, she was diagnosed like her sister. Luckily, the eldest sister Lucy escaped this fatal disease, thanks to her father.

Ashleigh was worse than his sister because he was 3 years older than him. She still walked until 5 years old and started talking. But only 4 weeks after being diagnosed, she began to lose her balance. Now he cannot speak anymore, must sit in a wheelchair and eat with a catheter. My eyes are also fading.
Alisha is still able to walk, but her mother knows that her future is very bleak. She just hopes that she will live longer because she seems to be healthier in the two sisters.
Ashleigh currently attends a special kindergarten and Alisha will start studying there next September.
" I know that soon I will have only one daughter instead of three, and we are enjoying every day they are still here ."
