TENS is the first device licensed for use in the United States to prevent migraines and is marketed under the name "Cefaly." This is a small handheld device shaped like a bandage. The user of this device can place it in the middle of the forehead by using a self-adhesive electrode.

The device transmits an electric current through the skin and muscle tissue to stimulate the branches of the trigeminal nerve that are associated with migraines. Device users may have a tingling sensation or are massaged at the body where the electrode is attached.

According to FDA, "Cefaly" is prescribed to patients 18 years or older and should only be used once a day for 20 minutes. The marketing authorization for this device is based on the analysis of the data obtained after clinical trials for 67 migraine patients in Belgium.

Research shows that people who use the device will significantly reduce the number of migraine days in a month and use less medicine than those who use the placebo.
