Video: Detecting the Earth's second magnetic field

The very weak and very weak second-formed magnetic field was discovered by three European Space Agency (ESA) satellites.

The magnetic field is produced primarily from liquid iron in the outer core of the Earth. However, the European Space Agency (ESA) discovered the second magnetic field formed by salt in the ocean on Earth.

This second magnetic field is quite weak.

Salt creates an electric current when the tide rises and falls under the Moon. This magnetic field is very weak, about 20,000 times weaker than the magnetic field created by iron in the Earth's core.

ESA detected the second field thanks to the "Swarm" trio of satellites launched in 2013.

New findings can help scientists better understand climate change.
