On the night of the 15th and the morning of December 16, Vietnamese people will have the opportunity to observe the Geminids - the biggest meteor shower of the year with an extreme frequency of up to 100 tracks per hour.

Vietnam prepares to catch meteor shower Geminids

Meteor shower Geminids usually appear every year around 4 - 17 December. According to the International Meteorological Organization (IMO), the peak of the meteor shower this year takes place around 18:00 UTC on December 14, ie 1 am on December 15, Vietnam time.

" The best observation time in Vietnam is on the night of 14 and dawn on December 15 with the frequency from 50 to 100 streaks per hour. Under the ideal observation conditions, it can be up to 120 streaks per hour", Mr. Dang Tuan Duy, HCMC amateur astronomical club said.

The heart of the meteor shower is Gemini's constellation Gemini. This constellation grows gradually from the east at about 20:00 and gradually rises to near morning.

According to Mr. Duy, viewers can start observing from around 22h when the focus has risen quite high until dawn . "This year the moon dive into the western sky when it is dark leaving the sky dark enough for observing meteor streaks , " Duy said.

Geminids always topped the meteor shower of the year because of the brilliantness and frequency. It originates from the 3,200 Phaethon object. Scientists believe that this object is the core of a certain comet left after the journeys and blown off by the solar wind. 3,200 Phaethon in the past moved across the earth's orbit and left a dust band.

To observe the largest meteor shower of the year, experts recommend that viewers only need to use the naked eye.
