At the seminar on non-communicable diseases organized by the Ministry of Health and the Danish Ministry of Development Cooperation at the Hanoi School of Public Health on 5 May, experts were worried about the burden of disease of Vietnamese people.

It is estimated that Vietnam has about 12 million people with hypertension, nearly 3 million people with diabetes, 2 million people with chronic lung disease and about 120,000 new cases of cancer each year. Especially hypertensive disease it can cause cardiovascular diseases - the leading cause of death in Vietnam.

According to Mr. Tran Quoc Bao, Head of Non-communicable Disease Control Department, Department of Preventive Medicine (Ministry of Health): There are 4 common risk factors for non-communicable disease: smoking, alcohol use at the level of harmful, unreasonable nutrition, lack of physical activity, leading to changes in metabolism in the body, causing overweight and obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, increasing blood sugar, thereby develop into disease.

In particular, hypertension is the leading cause of stroke, heart attack, heart failure, causing hundreds of thousands of deaths, paralysis, disability or disability every year.

The Preventive Medicine Department, Ministry of Health has conducted a survey to investigate the causes of increased non-communicable diseases in Vietnam. According to the survey, more than half of adults in our country eat less vegetables and fruits than recommended by the World Health Organization (minimum of 400 grams per day of adults). This is a way to prevent many diseases but Vietnamese people only achieve half.

The report of the National Institute of Nutrition also indicated that Vietnamese people ate very little vegetables with a level of 170-200 grams / day but ate more than 80 grams / day, 3-4 times higher than previous years. While the amount of fish only reached 60 grams / day, equal to one fifth of the World Health Organization's recommendation.

Meanwhile, 47% of adult men regularly smoke, 77% of adult men drink alcohol, of which 44% drink alcohol at harmful levels and 1/3 of adults lack of physical activity.

Along with that salty eating habit . According to Master Bao, an average of 9.4 grams per person per day, nearly double the recommended level, is also a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and stroke.

With 12 million people with hypertension, this is the leading disease causing stroke, myocardial infarction and other cardiovascular diseases that make hundreds of thousands of people disabled and lose their working capacity every year.

The representative of the Preventive Medicine Department emphasized that it is time for us to change to have a healthy life, prevent disease.

  1. Reasonable diet: Less than 5g salt / day;increase the consumption of green vegetables and fresh fruits;restricting foods high in cholesterol and saturated fatty acids;ensure sufficient potassium and trace elements in the daily diet.
  2. Maintain a healthy weight and try to maintain waist circumference below 90 cm in men and less than 80 cm in women.
  3. Do not smoke cigarettes or pipe tobacco, limit alcohol consumption.
  4. Increase physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day.
  5. Avoid anxiety, stress, positive living, reasonable rest.
  6. Adults need to regularly check blood pressure for early detection of hypertension.People with hypertension besides applying positive measures such as lifestyle changes, should be monitored, long-term disease management and adherence to treatment as directed by the physician.
