Volcanic activity in Reunion Island increased sharply

Flow of lava, magma of Piton volcano on French Reunion island of Mascareignes archipelago in the Indian Ocean, has erupted higher than 200 meters.

Over the past week, the lava flow of Piton volcano has spread to the village of Tremblet in Saint-Philippe (southeast of Reunion Island). Although scientists believe that at this time, the threat of volcanism is still insignificant, but about 100 villagers rushed to leave the house and only two hours later, some returned home.

The rumbling sounds echoed from the crater still with lava flows flowing out from the crater and bright red fire in the sky. The lava flow also cut off traffic between the national highway and the hamlet of 200 households. In addition, volcanic experts have recorded many 3-magnitude earthquakes under the volcano in recent days, an unprecedented phenomenon in the last 20 years.

The regional volcanic observatory confirms the eruption of lava flow up to 3 million m3 / day since the beginning of the week so far. The flow of magma waterfall flowing into the sea at speeds of more than 60 km / hour has cut off traffic within nearly two kilometers. However, according to scientists at the Observatory, the level of toxic gas from these spills is still far from the alarming threshold. On the morning of 7-4, a thin layer of ash covered the neighborhoods of Saint-André, east of Reunion Island, while the fumes were showing signs of weakening.
