According to Itar-Tass, volcanic activity does not affect surrounding residential areas. However, Kamchatka's emergency handling agency raised the level of photo alerts to the gold level for airline operations. Accordingly, airlines are recommended to change the expected route, to reduce the risk of affecting aircraft engines. Tourism companies in the region are also warned not to organize tours to the area near the volcano.

The Shiveluch volcano is located in the northeast of the Kamchatka peninsula. This is one of the most active volcanoes in Kamchatka. Shiveluch has a height of 3,283m, a volcanic foot diameter of about 45-50km. The highest point of the volcanic activity section is called Young Shiveluch , which is 2.8km from sea level. The nearest residential area is Klyuchi, 50km away.

The previous periods of strong volcanic activity were recorded in the years 1980-1981 and 1993-1995. The most recent eruption, once judged by scientists as catastrophic, occurred in 1964.
