We are about to see two beautiful meteor shower in 12/2018

In the last month of 2018, astronomers have the opportunity to admire the most special events of the year.

Geminids meteor shower 2018 on December 13 morning on December 14th

According to National Geographic, everywhere on Earth can observe the biggest meteor shower this year. Meteor shower Geminids usually appear every year around 4-17 December.

This is the biggest meteor shower of the year.

The peak of 2018 Geminids will fall on the evening of the 13th and the morning of the 14th. This is the biggest meteor shower of the year, with a density of up to 120 tracks per hour.

Unlike most other meteor showers, Geminids originated from a 3,200 Phaethon asteroid, with orbit around the Sun for 1.4 years.

Comet 46P / Wirtanen

46P / Wirtanen Comet, about 1.2 km in diameter, was first discovered in 1948. It flew around the Sun in a 5.4 year cycle and this time approached closest to Earth at a distance of 11, 5 million km on December 16.

It is expected that comets will have an apparent brightness of 3 to 6, meaning that we can see it in the night sky with the naked eye, even in cities with light pollution.

Comets are a celestial object similar to asteroids but are not composed of many rocks, but mostly ice.

When it comes to the sun, new comets shine brightly. The dust tail directly scatters sunlight according to the Mie mechanism, creating a white color, while the ionized tail generates a high-energy photon, which has a spectrum that is biased toward blue.

Ursid meteor shower on December 22

Ursid meteor shower originating from comet 8P / Tuttle, will appear from December 17 to December 23. However, the meteor shower will reach its peak on December 22.

This is a small meteor shower, the density is about 10-15 streaks per hour.
