The majority of emoji users agree that the 'laugh out of tears' symbol is extremely interesting.

A survey of 7,000 users in the US, UK, Germany, France, Japan, Australia and Korea by Adobe found that the 'laugh out of tears' icon is the world's most popular emoji . The second and third symbols are thumbs (approval) and red hearts, respectively. The 'wink kiss' and 'sad face' icons complete the top 5.

Adobe announced the discovery just before Emoji Day 2021 took place. However, not everyone agrees with the number 1 position. For example, Gen Z thinks that the 'laughing out of tears' emoji is no longer interesting, because older people like mothers, siblings, people old… all use it.

Adobe's latest Emoji Trends report also identifies three of the most misunderstood emojis. Those are the eggplant, peach and clown face symbols.

The majority of survey respondents (90%) believe that emoji make it easier for them to express their opinions, 89% said emoji simplifies communication, overcoming language barriers. 67% think emoji users are more friendly, fun, and interesting than those who don't.

Many people feel more comfortable expressing emotions with emojis than talking face-to-face or on the phone. 55% revealed that using emojis when talking makes their mental health more positive. 76% say emoji is an important communication tool to create unity, respect and mutual understanding. 88% feel empathy for emoji users.
