At this risk, WHO calls for increased efforts to combat epidemics, and to share information about viruses to help develop effective vaccines against diseases. Otherwise, it could have a big impact on the global economy and international security.
In a report called ' For a safer future ,' the WHO says new diseases that occur every year are 'unprecedented in history'. From the 1970s to the present, there have been 39 new diseases emerging, and in the last five years alone, WHO has discovered 1,100 different epidemics in the world, including cholera, polio and bird flu. .
WHO also called on governments to publicly disclose epidemics in their countries, and said that nearly half of the current outbreaks are from the media.
Also according to WHO, disease control is struggling, especially with tuberculosis, due to drug resistance, which is caused by overuse of other drugs and obsolete medical equipment.
