Who will pioneer 3G technology in Vietnam?
EVN Telecom, the second CDMA technology mobile network in Vietnam, has just become the first telecommunications service provider to be approved for 3G technology deployment, and the Government has agreed on the principle of testing. Mobile WiMax technology this year.
Who will "flag" 3G in Vietnam?
Also in the first quarter of this year, EVN Telecom must complete the review of WiMax service testing. Meanwhile, all three major telecom service providers MobiFone, VinaPhone and Viettel, despite having tested 3G for many years and plan to provide services in 2007, are still waiting for a license.
According to the decision of the Government, EVN Telecom is allowed to use 1.900MHz frequency to deploy 3G mobile communication system according to the standards of the International Telecommunication Union. Also in the first quarter of this year, EVN Telecom had to complete a review of the test, so that the Government could consider licensing EVN Telecom to provide this service.

However, according to the representative of the Ministry of Posts and Telematics, only 3 or 4 out of 6 mobile telecommunication service providers now have the opportunity to receive 3G technology deployment licenses. Thus, the remaining 5 suppliers will have to race to obtain 2-3 remaining licenses for 3G technology deployment.
Wimax will also have to "interrupt"
Not only is the bandwidth available for 3G technology limited, the frequency range for WiMax service is also sufficient to supply only three suppliers. Meanwhile, in addition to EVN Telecom, there are 4 suppliers that are testing WiMax services, including VNPT, FPT, VTC and Viettel.
In which, VNPT is testing WiMax service in Lao Cai, and Viettel is testing in Hanoi area. However, only Viettel is testing mobile WiMax devices with access speed from 1 Mbps to 3Mvps while traveling up to 100km / h. The other three companies are only licensed to have a fixed WiMax test.
According to a representative of EVN Telecom, the company will deploy 3G services immediately to improve its service delivery, including data and audio transmission services. According to this representative, the current network of EVN telecom is also capable of serving both the old frequency band (450MHz) and the newly licensed frequency band (1.900MHz).
The addition of the new band on the old frequency band will allow EVN Telecom to provide terminal equipment at a cheaper price, since the current average terminal price of 096 network is US $ 200.
Currently, the value of terminal equipment is one of the barriers for EVN Telecom to promote the business of CDMA-based mobile phone services in Vietnam. The company will also begin drafting a plan for mobile WiMax technology this quarter and expects to be deployed in a number of suburbs in the second quarter of this year, after a long period of preparation for testing. ' We will reorganize the network and seek foreign partners to implement 3G and WiMax technology simultaneously ,' said EVN Telecom representative.
EVN currently has 700,000 subscribers across the network, including wireless fixed phones, E-Mobile and E-Phone, and is planning to increase the total number of subscribers across the network to 2 million in 2007.
