According to researchers at the University of Sheffield (England), there are two important factors that help ants to orient themselves when searching for far-away bait is the angle between the two turns they create and a characteristic scent made by them.

For example, when researching on weaver ants, the scientists found that the pathway of the prey originated from the ants established by using the characteristic odor as a signal for the animals to follow them.

In places where the route needs to be forked to lead to a source of food, one of the corners between the turns created by the ant will always be 600. At that time, any ant will get out of the way. The route can also find the right path by finding this narrow angle. To determine the way back to the nest, that ant just needs to turn its back to the narrow angle to be able to orient it correctly.
