Jean-Marie Schaller is passionate about fossils, gemstones and especially meteorites . Louis Moinet has previously incorporated meteorite fragments into watches, but now they have brought a new watch that goes beyond everyone's imagination.

It is the Cosmopolis, currently on display at the Musée d'Histoire des Sciences , in Geneva, Switzerland. This tourbillon watch holds the Guinness World Record for the title of 'Most Meteorites on a Watch' , with 12 pieces from 12 different meteorites on the dial. Meteorites originate from comets and asteroids from outer space and travel through the atmosphere to reach the surface of the earth.

'More than a great work of watchmaking, Cosmopolis is a historical and scientific journey, a microcosm of the macrocosm' , says Jean-Marie Schaller.

As for the meteorites embedded in the watch, Schaller spent 20 years collecting them and decided to create an unprecedented watch, to showcase the beauty of the space rocks. Each of the 12 meteorites has its own story. Some of them are even ' older' than Earth.

The most captivating space rock is a black Chondrite, carefully placed behind the tourbillon cage. Other meteorites are placed in 10 circles, forming markers around the dial. Notable among them is the Jbilet Winselman meteorite, found in Morocco, west of the Sahara.

The Erg Chech meteorite is the oldest known igneous rock and comes from an asteroid that no longer exists. It traveled more than 4 billion years before reaching Earth. Erg Chech is particularly striking with its combination of green and brown colors and its surface created by lava flows.

Impressive meteorites include the Allende meteorite from the 1969 Mexican meteorite shower. It is estimated to be 4.5 billion years old and is a rare primitive meteorite left over from the early formation of the planet. According to researchers, it is likely that this meteorite originated from a small planet located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.

At the heart of the watch is the Dhofar 461 , an extremely rare lunar meteorite, characterized by white spots on its interior. There are only 300 recorded lunar meteorites, all of which have been ejected from the Moon over the past 20 million years. That's what makes this custom watch so valuable: $245,000.

The search for watches has skyrocketed in recent years, according to Alexandre Ghotbi, head of the Watches department, Europe and the Middle East, at Phillips auction house.

Several other brands have also incorporated meteorite fragments into their designs, but none have been as expensive and as numerous as Louis Moinet's Cosmopolis.
