Yahoo Mail will increase unlimited storage
Yahoo yesterday (March 27) announced plans to provide its email service users with an unlimited storage space starting in May this year.
Yahoo's plan can be seen as the answer to an explosion in the size of attachments, especially when users share content that requires large storage space such as images, music and More video via email.
Currently the limit of Yahoo's email service storage space is 1GB. Microsoft puts a limit of 2GB. The biggest email storage service available today is Google's Gmail with 2.8GB.
" Users will have no reason to delete old emails ," said Yahoo co-founder David Filo. " You can store it freely for as long as you want ."
Officials say the decision to remove the limited storage space for Yahoo's email service shows a downward trend in storage device costs.
About a decade ago Yahoo's email service only had 4MB of storage space. But it was an era of floppy disks with a maximum storage capacity of only 1.44MB. Today a personal computer can store thousands of billions of bytes of data. Or as a compact Apple iPod 80GB can store up to 100 hours of video.
John Kremer, vice president of Yahoo Mail, said the removal of the email service storage limit will start in May this year. It is expected to take about 1 month to complete the conversion.
" 1GB has now become the average storage level of users. In addition, we see continuous growth in the amount of content that has a large capacity like images or videos ."
However, Chinese and Japanese users will not be eligible for new Yahoo offers. " We will continue to study separate storage space plans for the two markets above ," Kremer said.
Filo added that Yahoo is also considering removing the limited storage space for other services such as Flickr photo sharing.
