17 dolphins die from stranding

17 dolphins were killed near Indonesia's Ujung Kulon National Park on September 29, after they were trapped in shallow waters off Banten Province.

People living around the area witnessed the incident and informed national park officials. Muhammad Ganda Saputra, a local resident, said: 'About 1pm I went to this place and saw a total of 16 dolphins died, because they were stranded on the beach. In addition, there are 7 other dolphins still alive in the knee-high water area. '

Not long after Mr. Saputra informed the reporters about that information, another dolphin was killed.

Ujung Kulon National Park officials said they will continue patrolling to ensure safety for the remaining 6 dolphins. Speaking to the press, Agus Priabudi, Ujung Kulon National Park director, said that despite the unfortunate incident, it showed strong cooperation between the community and the national park.

He said: 'I want to express my gratitude to the active participation of the local community who discovered the incident. This is a model of cooperation between the community and the functional force to protect the waters and the National Park 'area.
