2006: International Year of Sea Turtles

International Fund for Wildlife Protection (World Wild Fund - WWF) in collaboration with the Institute of Seafood Research (abbreviated as RIMF) and International Conservation Organization (The World Conservation Union - IUCN) launched the International Year about Sea Turtle 2006 in Vietnam. At the same time, these three organizations announced a new cooperation project to preserve marine turtles in Vietnam.

The signing ceremony of the agreement between WWF Vietnam Program, IUCN Vietnam and the Seafood Research Institute on coordinating the implementation of a new project by the US Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) NOAA) and WWF International sponsor, with the main objective of reducing the rate of turtles killed by accidental nets in Vietnam's fisheries.

A Memorandum of Understanding has been drawn up by the signatories to a common framework for cooperation between the three agencies to conduct priority activities on research, monitoring and management of sea turtles.

According to international experts, by implementing a sea turtle monitoring program on fishing vessels for the first time in Vietnam.

This project will help to determine the exact level of interaction between fishing and turtles at sea.

On that basis, the project will help build and implement practical management solutions, including solutions to improve fishing gears to reduce impacts on sea turtles.

Currently, there are five species of sea turtles distributed in Vietnam's waters, all of which are listed as endangered by the Vietnamese Government.
