6 finger hand is a disaster?

The hands are 'wonderful gifts' of evolution for human beings. They can do everything, from needlework to logging. However, evolutionary biologists still do not really understand the reason why humans, as well as the vast majority of animals have four limbs, only 5 fingers on each hand.

The hands are 'wonderful gifts' of evolution for human beings. They can do everything, from needlework to logging. However, evolutionary biologists still do not really understand the reason why humans, as well as the vast majority of animals have four limbs, only 5 fingers on each hand. Will having 6 fingers make things better or worse?

Having an extra finger can make some tasks easier. We can play more complicated instruments, type faster computers, hold objects more firmly. A wider palm will help us hold a stronger basketball, said geneticist Cliff Tabin of Harvard Medical School. However, our two main fingers are still thumb and forefinger. Therefore, adding or removing a ring finger on the base does not create too many changes.

A six-fingered hand does not carry much evolutionary value for humans.

Sharing on Life's Little Mysteries, Tabin said, perhaps mathematics will be the most impacted field and people may have to build a new counting system.

Currently, people mainly count by tens. In other words, it's a 10-count based coefficient that obviously comes from the fact that we have 10 fingers. (Proof is the digit digit in English that points to the finger and the number).

If we have six fingers on each hand, then people will have to get used to the system based on the 'dozen', Tabin argues.

Some people still have 6 fingers, but the phenomenon is considered a genetic error, which is unusual. The natural selection process did not make the six fingers popular, because the two pink finger 'do not contribute much and do not create any valuable evolutionary advantage' for humans. If it really takes a sixth finger, Tabin believes it will grow from the wrist and play the role of a secondary thumb.

Frank Wilson, a neurologist, agrees that 6 fingers are too much. In fact, robotics research has shown that machine arms still work well with just two, three or four fingers.'I will vote for four fingers before voting for six fingers,' Wilson concludes.
