A special lake located halfway between the sky and the sea.
Perched precariously on a cliff above the sea, Lake Leitisvatn is the most visited spot in the Faroe Islands.
Considered a magical gift of nature, Lake Leitisvatn lies halfway between the sky and the sea, creating an incredibly surreal beauty.
The lake has two names at the same time, located in a special position between the sky and the sea.
Lake Leitisvatn, also known as Sorvagsvatn, is located on the island of Vagar. It is also the largest lake in the Faroe Islands, located between the Norwegian Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. With an area of up to 3.4 km 2 , Lake Leitisvatn is 3 times larger than Fjallavatn - the second largest lake in the Faroe Islands and also located on the island of Vagar.
Magical view of Lake Leitisvatn from above.
The special thing about Lake Leitisvatn is that it is located incredibly close to the sea . The pictures taken by the photographer from a high angle show that it looks like the water from the lake will fall into the sea like a waterfall at any moment.
Sometimes when the lake water exceeds its capacity, it flows into the sea like a waterfall.
The optical illusion and the shooting angle make it easy to mistake the distance from the lake to the sea as being several hundred meters. But in reality, the lake is only about 30 meters above sea level, and is surrounded by majestic cliffs. Therefore, the lake water never overflows, creating the feeling that the lake is located halfway between the sky and the sea.
Sometimes, when the lake is full of water beyond its capacity, it will form waterfall-like streams of water flowing into the sea below. The scene of white water flowing into the ocean creates an impressive moment that fascinates visitors.
In the past, the locals had a heated argument about naming the lake. The people of Sorvagsvatn, one of the larger villages on Vagar Island, wanted to name the lake after their village. On the other hand, the people of Miðvágur wanted to call the lake Leitisvatn. Since then, the lake has had two names at the same time.
