After the earthquake, Vietnam can suffer tsunamis
Mr. Le Huy Minh, Director of the Earthquake Reporting Center and Tsunami Warning- The Institute of Geophysics said that the occurrence of earthquakes in Lao Cai is normal and worries about tsunamis occur in Vietnam. There is also basis.
From the beginning of the year until now, in Lao Cai province alone, there has been a sensation of earthquake aftershocks from surrounding areas: Yunnan - China (April 19); Myanmar border area (March 24) and most recently on the night of 21/5, in the city. Lao Cai happened earthquake phenomenon. Many people find beds with shaking, handrail and high-rise windows.
Especially on the morning of April 28, an earthquake continued to occur in Lai Chau. This is the 3rd consecutive strong earthquake on the 3.5 richter scale and is one of about 10 earthquakes occurring in Son La and Lai Chau areas in only 4 days. Also on April 28, there were 5-6 earthquakes in Lai Chau and Thanh Hoa. There are also many other small earthquakes that have happened. This phenomenon has caused many people to be worried and bewildered.
Is this the first manifestation of the next series of unusual natural phenomena? We had an interview with Dr. Le Huy Minh, Director of Earthquake Reporting Center and Tsunami Warning - Geophysical Institute.
From the beginning of the year until now Lao Cai continuously has earthquakes. How can this be explained? Can we predict in advance the occurrence of subsequent earthquakes?
- Dr. Le Huy Minh: The continuous earthquakes in recent years show that the fault zones in our country are active and do not rule out a strong earthquake cycle in Vietnam.
Dr. Le Huy Minh, Director of Earthquake Reporting Center and Tsunami Warning,
Institute of Geophysics
Vietnam lies on a series of fault zones such as Red River fault zone; The area of the Ma River extending from Dien Bien to Ma River, returning to Laos is returning to Vietnam in the land of Thanh Hoa; Lai Chau and Dien Bien fractures; Son La fault so earthquakes sometimes occur.
Earthquakes on the fault zones, it is estimated that aftershocks, degrees, but not foreseeable is when the earthquake happens and how it will happen.
So is this an unusual phenomenon?
- Not an unusual phenomenon because earthquakes occur relatively frequently. On Earth every day millions of earthquakes happen. But indeed, from last year to this year, earthquakes have occurred more than in previous years. But why is this phenomenon difficult to explain because this is an unusual natural phenomenon.
In fact, Vietnam 's warning station system is better so when an earthquake occurs, the earthquake reporting center and tsunami warning will regularly inform people.
But there is the fact that people do not know specifically about earthquakes and tsunamis so they will think about earthquakes so much, Vietnam is about to have tsunamis?
- It is true that since the beginning of the 21st century, the phenomenon of natural disasters in the world has occurred a lot, there have been many great and dangerous tsunamis in Chile, Japan . So the concern of the people is also basis.
It is more complicated for a child entering the 21st century. Earthquakes in Vietnam are also more. But earthquakes in Vietnam have not had big earthquakes.
So far, only three major earthquakes, Dien Bien earthquake (1935) with the magnitude of 6.75 Richter, occurred on the Ma river break zone. The second big battle is the Tuan Giao earthquake (1983), with intensity of 6.8 Richter scale, occurring in the Son La fault zone.
In addition, the South Central Coast region, in 1923 also had a 6.1 earthquake magnitude (in the waters of Vung Tau, Phan Thiet). This earthquake is accompanied by Hon Choi volcanic eruption phenomenon, on the fault zone of 109-110 meridian.
From 2005 onwards, there seems to be more and more earthquakes, there are five more to 10 games. However, the intensity of earthquakes is almost the same, there is no sharp increase or decrease.
In 2010, there were many earthquakes in Vietnam. In it, the biggest match reaches 5 Richter scale. The smaller ones occur on a series of faults such as Muong Lay - Bac Yen, Cao Bang - Tien Yen, Ma River, Song Ca . However, these earthquakes do not cause great damage.
So can there be tsunamis in Vietnam?
- So far there is no evidence to confirm that the coast of Vietnam is heavily affected by tsunamis. Noting the scientific data and research papers so far, there is no evidence that a tsunami existed in Vietnam. But the earthquake study in the East Sea shows that in the deep-water trench of the Manila submerged area in the Philippines, if there is an 8.5 magnitude earthquake (in fact, in 2006, there was an earthquake of 8.2 degrees. richter, but not causing tsunamis) can also cause tsunamis on the coast of Vietnam. How specific is not yet known.
Thus, the coast of Vietnam only occurs if the earthquake in the submerged strip in Manila (Philippines) has occurred earthquakes above 8.5 richter?
- Right. If an earthquake reaches 8.5 magnitudes, the risk of tsunamis in the Vietnamese coast is present. But it must happen in the deep water trench of submerged Manila is dangerous.
Vietnam has broken episodes, at these points, earthquakes are normal, there is nothing to worry about tsunami. Because the Institute of Geophysics has a very good earthquake monitoring system. If there is an earthquake with tsunamis in the Philippines, Vietnam still has two hours to issue warnings and evacuate people in areas at risk of tsunamis.
Thank you Sir!
