Phan Thiet and Ho Chi Minh City shook due to earthquake aftershocks

* Earthquakes 4.7 magnitude off Phan Thiet

Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Hong Phuong - deputy director of the Earthquake Reporting Center and tsunami warning (Institute of Geophysics) - said at 8:55 today (June 23), an earthquake of magnitude 4, 7 riches occurred off the coast of Phan Thiet and shocked level 4 to Ho Chi Minh City.

Talking with Online Youth , Associate Professor Phuong positioned the earthquake with coordinates of 10.5 latitude North, 109 degrees east longitude off Phan Thiet sea.

Because the earthquake in the far sea and the magnitude of 4.7 magnitude is medium level, it does not cause damage on land and does not create tsunamis.

Phan Thiet and Ho Chi Minh City: The building shook

In Phan Thiet, when an earthquake occurred, a number of people in the area near the office of Binh Thuan Provincial Party Committee (P. Phu Trinh, Phan Thiet City, Binh Thuan) said they felt the house was shaking in the distance. 3-4 seconds.

An official from Binh Thuan newspaper said: ' When I was sitting on the first floor of the newspaper Binh Thuan, I found the room shaking. I ran to the balcony when I saw a few people on the ground floor of the newspaper running to the corridor and shouting: The earthquake! I also heard from the office of Binh Thuan Provincial Party Committee a shout: Aftershock! ".

About 5 minutes later, everyone returned to work normally.

In Ho Chi Minh City, I felt a strong tremor at level 4. An employee working at the 5th floor of the Tuoi Tre newspaper building (Ward 9, Phu Nhuan District) said: " I am working, I feel the ground vibrate. I felt and dizzy for a few seconds, but I thought I was dizzy, but I calmed down and found the background shaking and wobbling .

Around 9:30 am, some people are working at CENTEC Tower (No. 72-74 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City) said that they felt slight shaking.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Quang - working at Hung Phu Real Estate Investment Joint Stock Company (7th floor of CENTEC building) said: ' At 9.30 am, I was sitting and working on a chair with a feeling of wobble, dizziness in 3 seconds. I thought someone was yanking a chair from behind but when I turned around, I didn't see anyone. I walked out of the room when I heard many people shouting the earthquake . '

After that, Mr. Quang exchanged with a few people in the company and they said there was a feeling of wobble like him.

An accountant of the company also added that the wall clock was deflected after the office shook slightly.

Ms. Bui Thanh Giang - working at Technip Company (3rd floor of CENTEC building) also has the feeling of wobble like Mr. Nguyen Thanh Quang. Ms. Thanh Giang said that the aftershock lasts about 4 - 5 seconds. Some people working on the 3rd floor also feel like Ms. Thanh Giang.

Currently, the Institute of Geophysics is updating the data as well as monitoring the next developments.

Meridian fracture 109

According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hong Phuong - deputy director of Earthquake Alert and Tsunami Warning Center (Institute of Geophysics), in the south of our country earthquakes often occur on the southeastern continental shelf in place. The relatively deep fault is often called the meridian fault system 109.

The earthquake this morning occurred at this fault system. This is a fault system that runs along the central coast and pulls southward, slightly driving to the southwest. Here there were many medium-sized earthquakes. In particular, in 2005, there were two earthquakes in this fault range with magnitude 5.1 and 5.5 richter. Then in the following years, there were also weaker earthquakes.

According to scientific judgments, on the strip of the 109th meridian fault, there is the possibility of an earthquake with the greatest intensity is level 7. However, because earthquakes often occur at sea, in big cities when affected by the spread of the earthquake, the earthquake level is reduced. Therefore, in case of a major earthquake, in Ho Chi Minh City, there may be level 4, level 5 tremors and a maximum of level 6.

However, according to Associate Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hong Phuong, in fact, there has not been any earthquake with the greatest intensity occurring on this fault. Where earthquakes occur closer to shore, the tremors for the mainland are larger, so it is difficult to predict what happens. If an earthquake occurs at level 7 and near shore, tsunamis can occur in the coastal area.
