An asteroid the size of a bus will reach Earth in early 2022
Recently, scientists predicted an asteroid will reach Earth in early 2022. However, they also think it does not pose a danger to our planet.
The asteroid is about the size of a bus.
According to the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), asteroid 2014 YE15, first discovered in 2014, will approach Earth at a distance of 7,400,000 km on January 6.
2014 YE15 is about 7m in size, about the size of a bus, so NASA doesn't consider it a big threat. NASA's criteria for objects considered dangerous include sizes greater than 150m and approaching Earth within a distance of 7.5 million km.
In another development, on December 29, an asteroid with a size of about 149m will approach Earth at a distance of 3,540,000 km. This asteroid approaches Earth about every few days, so scientists don't think this is anything to worry about.
However, this does not mean that we do not need to keep an eye on them. Even a small meteorite can cause trouble. In 2013, a 20m-long asteroid exploded in Chelyabinsk, Russia, releasing an energy equivalent to between 26 and 33 atomic bomb explosions. Several buildings were damaged and about 1,500 people were treated for injuries following the blast.
