Scientists announce preliminary results of meteorite fragments falling to Flensburg , Germany, Science Daily reported on February 18. It plunged into Earth's atmosphere last September and exploded, surprising hundreds of witnesses. The next day, a resident of Flensburg found the 24.5-gram stone with a black outer shell in his garden.
Dieter Heinlein, an expert at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), recognizes this as a piece of meteorite and sends it to researchers at the Planetary Science Institute at the University of Münster. Professors Addi Bischoff and Markus Patzek, who are studying for a PhD, conduct an analysis of the mineral and chemical composition of the stone. About 15 research institutes and universities in Germany, France, and Switzerland are also participating in the support.

Initial results show that Flensburg meteorite is extremely rare type of carbonaceous chondrite . This meteorite has great scientific value but is also very fragile, can break when it rains. Analysis by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows that it contains many minerals, especially layer silicate (sheet silicate) and carbonate salts, minerals formed when water is present on the planets. the early days of the solar system.
"The Flensburg meteorite is an extremely rare meteorite and the only one of its kind to fall in Germany. It proves that 4.56 billion years ago, there were small bodies of water containing water that existed in the early days. "Perhaps such bodies also brought water to Earth , " explained Bischoff.
