Angola: cholera kills 1,200 people

The World Health Organization (WHO) said last week that cholera outbreaks from mid-February to Angola have claimed 1,200 lives with more than 32,000 infections.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said last week that cholera outbreaks from mid-February to Angola have claimed 1,200 lives with more than 32,000 infections.

In the latest report on cholera in 11 of Angola's 18 provinces, the WHO said 32,634 people were found to be infected, with a mortality rate of 4%.

In Luanda province, cholera outbreaks occurred in slums in the provincial capital 12 weeks ago and continued to deteriorate with 232 deaths among 16,558 cases.

Cholera is a disease that can spread very quickly, on a large scale and is mainly caused by the use of unsanitary water sources.
