Avastin anticancer drugs can cause fasciitis

Canadian scientists have recently discovered that the cancer drug Avastin may be the cause of life-threatening fasciitis.

Reporter in Ottawa cited the results of a study by a group of experts from the Canadian Ministry of Health saying that by monitoring patients using Avastin for cancer treatment, there were initially two cases of fasciitis, in that one died.

The rate of fasciitis has a very rapid development with progression that usually lasts only 24 hours, so there is a high risk of life-threatening patients. The disease usually develops in people with skin or soft tissue infections in the body, sometimes only through a small skin lesion or surgical wound. People with diabetes or cancer are particularly at high risk of getting the disease because their immune systems have weakened.

Symptoms of illness include severe and sudden pain in the affected area. The patient can then have a fever, a swollen, red hot or blister under the skin. The skin around the wound may also peel or change color.

Currently the Canadian Ministry of Health has issued warnings accompanied by Avastin cancer treatment products from producer La Roche Ltd. Warnings indicate that anyone who has been taking Avastin, if they have the same symptoms or have found other abnormal signs, should quickly seek medical attention.

Avastin is often used to treat brain-related cancers, or to be used in combination with chemotherapy during the treatment of cancers of the colon, rectum and lungs.
