Better walking than jogging

Although good for the body, brisk walking greatly reduces cardiovascular risk compared to jogging.

Researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California (USA) compared data from two surveys of 33,060 joggers and 14,045 pedestrians.

Results showed that with the same energy consumption, pedestrians enjoy a higher health benefit than runners, according to a report on Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology.

The effect of two types of movements for participants, aged 18 to 80, was observed for 6 years before experts drew final conclusions.

Accordingly, jogging reduces cardiovascular risk by 4.5%, while fast walking reduces to 9.3%.

The risk of developing high blood pressure for the first time decreased by 4.2% in joggers and 7% in pedestrians.

Meanwhile, the same risk of diabetes decreases about 12% for both types of activity.
