Professor David Sherris of the University of Buffalo (New York), the study author, followed 31 wounded patients in the battlefield. These patients are divided into 2 groups. Less than 24 hours after the wound was closed, the first group received Botox injections, while the second group received the placebo. The researchers took pictures of patients 1 hour after the injection and 6 months later.
Two plastic surgeons, face-to-face specialists, assessed the extent of scarring without knowing the therapy used (Botox or placebo) on a scale of 0 to 10, point 10 was considered the most perfect. .
As a result, patients treated with Botox had higher scores than others (8.9 points versus 7.1 points). Botox drugs are extracted from botulic toxins that act by paralyzing the muscles near the wound to allow good scarring.
According to Professor Sherris, this is the first effective remedy to minimize scars. Although the study is based solely on facial wounds, he hopes in the future the technique will be applied to the rest of the body.
