Build a spillway dam to turn the lake into a green park

Ms. Ha Thi Kim Thanh, working at Da Nang Department of Science and Technology, has the idea of building different spillways to divide a lake into three small lakes, using the bacteria available in the lake to combine the planting of green plants capable of treating wastewater.

The idea named 'Improving the efficiency of using 29/3 Park in Danang City is based on the artificial wetland model', has just won the first prize of the 'Environmental protection idea' competition organized by the Central Youth Union. HCM organized.

Reduce pollution, create landscapes

According to the idea of Thanh, Lake Park 29/3 has an area of 11ha, divided into three small lakes: anaerobic lake, optional lake, aerobic lake. Between the biological lakes, spillways are built to keep the lake clear and increase the dissolved oxygen content to increase the efficiency of the water treatment process. At the same time, waste water sources poured into the lake are gathered into one, installed with garbage barriers to remove raw waste.

Anaerobic reservoirs receive domestic wastewater from residential areas, designed to help anaerobic microorganisms work. 'Active anaerobic organisms do not need oxygen. They use oxygen from nitrate and sulfate compounds to oxidize organic matter into methane and CO2, thereby removing organic matter from the bottom sediment of lake water , 'Kim Thanh introduced.

After that, the water through the spillway is arbitrary and carries out the biodegradation process. Under the right conditions, a significant amount of nutrients will be absorbed by aquatic organisms to help remove organic matter in the aquatic environment.

Finally, aerobic lakes have the largest area for oxygen to easily diffuse into the upper water layer and sunlight shines as algae grows. The process of water treatment occurs thanks to two agents, aerobic microorganisms and plants in the lake.

Here, strips of banana plants are planted to create beautiful landscapes and increase water treatment efficiency. Wastewater after passing through the three biological lakes system will be significantly improved, not polluting the receiving source.

Wait to turn the idea into reality

Kim Thanh said that the selection of artificial wetlands to treat the environment is because this type of soil is researched and widely used in the field of wastewater treatment in many countries around the world, environmentally friendly.

Appreciating the practicality and meaning of this idea, the Organizing Committee of the 'Environmental Protection Ideas' Contest sponsored 45 million VND to implement this topic.

However, according to Kim Thanh, the money is not enough to turn the topic into reality. 'I am willing to transfer the above idea to organizations and units to turn ideas into reality, help improve the environment, improve water use efficiency, create beautiful landscapes,' Thanh said.

This idea can be done in many other lakes, just change some points to suit the actual conditions of those lakes. However, the author notes: 'The operation of the artificial wetland model to improve the quality of park water should be maintained to maintain the best treatment efficiency by measures: dredging mud periodic; replacing, collecting plants in aerated lakes, avoiding the situation of death, causing sedimentation and aging of the park 'lake.
