1. Katskhi Pillar Monastery - Georgia

Katskhi Pillar Monastery is located on top of a nearly 40-meter-high rock pillar, about 200 kilometers west of Georgia's capital Tbilisi. According to CNN, Katskhi Pillar Monastery was built by local people from the 6th to the 8th century, used as a place to worship Saint Maximus the Confessor.

It was not until the 10th or 11th century that the first monk came to live in the monastery. Other monks before that only came to pray and then returned.

According to ESKIFY, in the 1500s, many ascetic hermits chose to come to this monastery to live and die in peace. After that, the monastery was abandoned for hundreds of years.

It wasn't until 1995 that a local monk returned to restore and live in the Katskhi Pillar monastery until 2015. It sounds like an exciting life but it is extremely dangerous because this is just a small piece of land, precariously perched on the top of a rock. The only way to reach Katskhi Pillar is by using an iron ladder. Local authorities have warned against climbing the rock and the monastery on it.

2. Takasugi-an Tea House (Japan)

Time magazine has named Takasugi-an one of the world's 10 most precarious structures. It is a simple and quiet teahouse designed in the traditional Japanese style. In Japanese, Takasugi-an means "teahouse built too high".

Japanese architect Terunobu Fujimori built this house himself on his family's land in Nagano City. The one-room house sits atop two perfectly balanced chestnut trees, which were cut down and transported from a nearby mountain. If you're not afraid of heights, climb the ladder to the café for a peaceful, meditative afternoon tea.

3. Hanging Temple of Hengshan (China)

The ancient Hanging Temple of Hengshan is located on the slopes of Hengshan Mountain in Datong City, Shanxi Province, China. According to legend, the monk Liao Ran during the Northern Wei Dynasty (386–534) built the temple entirely of wood. To date, the temple is nearly 1,500 years old.

According to China Highlights, we can see many pillars supporting the temple now, but in fact, the temple did not need the help of wooden pillars in the beginning. They were added later to prevent the temple from collapsing.

4. House on an "oasis" in the middle of the Drina River (Serbia)

In rural Serbia, near the town of Bajina Bašta, there is a small wooden house perched on a rock in the middle of the Drina River. It looks as if even a slight rise in the tide could destroy the house. And in fact, it does.

A group of swimmers built the house in 1968 as a place to stay when times got tough. However, due to its precarious location, the house has been destroyed by floods seven times, each time it has been repaired.

5. Castellfollit de la Roca Village (Spain)

The Culture Trip website describes the houses in the village of Castellfollit de la Roca, which sits on a clifftop at the confluence of two rivers. It is one of the most beautiful villages in Catalonia.

According to Web Fascinating Spain, the village covers just 1 square kilometer, making it the smallest in the province of Girona and the second smallest in Catalonia. Notably, the basalt quarry here is the only one still operating in Spain.
