People in Japan and China have used rice water to condition their hair for centuries. However, this remedy can come with some side effects such as dry hair and scalp irritation.
There is some evidence that rice bran extract , derived from the outer layer of the rice grain, may be helpful for people with hair loss, according to Shasa Hu, PhD, associate professor of dermatology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. However, there is not much in-depth research to prove the true effects of rice bran on hair . "Rice bran mineral extract is not found in supermarket rice because it is removed during the milling process ," Hu notes.

Rice water is generally safe when used topically, but it can sometimes cause mild irritation , swelling, redness, or scaling of the skin, especially in people with sensitive skin or skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis. Rice water products may also contain fragrances and other ingredients that can cause irritation. Some people find that rice water dries out and damages their hair instead of making it shiny or stronger, because the starch in rice water draws water out of the hair.
Experts advise against using homemade rice water because it does not contain rice bran, and encourage hair loss treatments that have more scientific evidence. If you do try it, only buy products from reputable sources to avoid harmful chemicals.
