The most prominent in sexual activity is the bonobos (scientific name: Pan paniscus) , related to chimpanzees, and commonly known as pygmy chimpanzees .

These chimpanzees are known by scientists as a "sex-crazed" species , as every individual is ready to perform mating acts that last throughout the day and night. They do this not only to serve their reproductive needs, but also to build bonds between individuals in the group.

"It is no exaggeration to say that the driving force behind the development of this group of chimpanzees is built on sex ," IFLscience assessed.

What's interesting about bonobos is that they're not limited to heterosexual behavior. Researchers have seen many chimpanzees exhibiting gender-neutral sexual behavior.

Specifically, female chimpanzees engage in genital rubbing, while males are willing to engage in oral sex with other males and are often observed hugging.

Researchers suggest that this type of same-sex behavior appears to mark an important social function in many mammals.

Along with maintaining strong social bonds, it also reduces sexual tension, reducing the risk of aggression and conflict between competing males.

The positive effects of same-sex behavior appear to be the answer to why so many independent evolutions occur in nature and may be a classic example of convergent evolution.

'These features of repeated evolutionary transitions to the same state may be signs of convergent evolution ,' the researchers said.

"Although it could have occurred by random evolution, the association with natural selection environments provides new evidence that adaptive evolution occurs . "
