Conservation of populations of white cheeked black langurs in Tuyen Quang

The community-based conservation project of the largest endangered white-cheeked langur in Vietnam is deployed in Lam Binh district, Tuyen Quang province with a total cost of nearly VND 1.9 billion. .

Mr. Nguyen Duc Tung, Director of Tuyen Quang Provincial Forest Protection Department, said this project was carried out by Human Resources and Conservation Organization (PRCF - a non-governmental organization in Vietnam) to conserve species. White-cheeked langurs are in danger of extinction on a global scale.

Accordingly, the project will be implemented until the end of July to help the people to raise awareness of protection of the species and biodiversity in Thuong Lam and Khu Ha communes (Lam Binh and Tuyen Quang districts).

The project also established and supported operating funds for two langurs supervision and protection teams in Thuong Lam and Khuon Ha communes.

The members of the team are zoned to manage, patrol patrol routes and are equipped with some equipment necessary for monitoring and protection such as binoculars, GPS locators, digital cameras .

In addition to the task of maintaining forest patrolling 7 days / month to collect materials on langurs, detecting cases of illegal hunting, the members of the team also propagated to the villagers in the village and commune, improving awareness of forest and langur protection, timely detection of violations of the Forest Protection and Development Law.

At the end of the project, PRCF provides recommendations for community-based nature tourism activities, supports activities for langur populations, determines affordability, and establishes institutional fees. environmental protection service in Tuyen Quang province.

PRCF also cooperates with commune authorities in the area of ​​live langurs, organizes propaganda leaflets on conservation of populations of white cheeked black langur and forest protection for more than 2,000 households; coordinating with the Lam Binh District Department of Education and Training to organize writing competitions, drawing on the living environment and habitats of the black-cheeked langur for students of Thuong Lam secondary school and Khuon Ha secondary school.

Thereby, the project helps students have more useful knowledge about the conservation of the white-cheeked langur and the local biodiversity.

White-cheeked black langur are primates that live mainly on limestone mountains. According to the PRCF report, there are about 400 individuals of white-cheeked langurs in the world today.

In Vietnam alone, there are over 100 individuals, of which Lam Binh district (Tuyen Quang) has the largest population of white-cheeked langurs with over 70 individuals, concentrated in Thuong Lam and Khuon Ha communes.
