Covid-19 patients may have impaired pulmonary function after recovery
The Hong Kong Hospital Administration published research results showing that after recovery, patients may have a 20-30% decline in lung function.
The results were published by the Hong Kong Hospital Administration on 12 March after observing the first group of Covid-19 patients discharged. Some patients recover despite impaired lung function and experience problems such as gasping for breath when walking fast.
Hong Kong has recorded 131 Covid-19 cases, including three deaths and 74 patients who have been discharged.
Dr. Owen Tsang Tak-yin, Medical Director of the Center for Infectious Diseases, Princess Margaret Hospital in Kwai Chung, said doctors monitored about 10 patients after discharge. Of these, 2-3 people cannot do the things they used to do before they got sick.
"They gasp if they walk a little faster , " said Dr. Owen Tsang Tak-yin. " Some patients may have reduced lung function by 20 to 30% after recovery ."
The doctor said these patients will be tested to determine lung function. Physical therapy will also be applied to enhance their lung function.

A scan of the lungs of nine Covid-19 patients at Princess Margaret Hospital showed the same symptoms as blurred glass lesions in all nine, showing that the virus could cause internal organ damage . However, Dr. Owen Tsang said it is still not possible to assess whether there are long-term effects on the lungs.
According to the doctor, the patient Covid-19 was discharged from the hospital to practice cardiological subjects such as exercise, swimming, to help the lungs recover gradually.
Public hospitals are about to conduct clinical trials of Remdesivir, the drug originally studied to treat Ebola, to see if it will work for Covid-19 patients. Dr. Tsang said this drug could lead to a number of complications such as liver dysfunction and blood sugar infection.
