Cycling makes women lose sensitivity in the private area
Women who ride on a regular basis are at risk of reducing genital sensitivity. However, young, healthy girls will not be affected much by sexual function.
(Photo: flickr.com) The researchers compared 48 women who were cyclists with 22 female runners. Bicyclists pedal at least 16 km per week, while riders pass at least 8 km a week.
"We found that girls racing bicycles reduced their sensitivity in the genital area ," study author Marsha Guess at Yale Medical School in the US said. " However, young, healthy women will not be greatly influenced by sexual function and quality of life."
While the health benefits of cycling are many, this activity is also related to pain in the neck and back, pelvic pain and other injuries in both men and women. A previous study conducted by the US National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health found a link between cycling with erectile dysfunction and male genital insensitivity.
"When sitting on the saddle, the external genital nerve and blood vessels are directly pinched. It is possible that this frequent compression in the female genital area leads to nerve damage and blood vessels that block the transfer signals to the brain, " Guess said.
