Discovered 3 new frog species in the Pacific

An expedition to the New Guinea island in the Pacific discovered three completely new tree frogs.

According to published information, three new frog species belong to the Litoria tree frog family, extremely rare. They were only seen once in Zootaxa before.

The first is Litoria pinocchio , which looks like most typical frogs. However, when examined more closely, it has a small spine with flesh and bones, about 2.5mm, protruding from the nose. Meanwhile, frog Litoria vivissimia only has a similar protruding part on her mouth.

Dr. Paul Oliver of Griffiths University, director of the Queensland Museum and the study's lead author, said that with such a typical feature, it is easy to think of the name Litoria pinocchio.

In fact, the newly discovered tree frogs were not the first to be found with characteristic spikes, but the size, structure and level of sex heterosexuals, the difference in appearance between males and females with a very different species in the Litoria family, the researchers suspect that this trait is used to choose mating and can be disguised, but not really sure.

The third frog is a jumping frog, which often lives in a tree and has a way of moving like 'flying' from tree to tree.

The researchers described it as a large green frog with purple thighs and named Litoria pterodactyla . Pterodactyl is the name given to the first known reptile.

Indonesia and New Guinea are typical biodiversity areas of frogs, with many new species described in the past 10-20 years. L. pinocchio was discovered in the Foja Mountains in northern Papua province, west of Indonesia-administered New Guinea. L. vivissimia is found in the middle mountains of the Cordiller Center, New Guinea Plateau is also in Papua. Meanwhile, L. pterodactyla is found in hill forests in Western Province, Papua New Guinea.
